Location

Kokkino Chorio (Greek: Κόκκινο Χωριό, meaning “Red Village”) is a traditional village located in the Apokoronas region, in the northeastern part of the Chania regional unit on the northwest coast of the island of Crete, in Greece.

It is one of the most traditional villages in the area, featuring stone houses, beautiful churches including Agios Georgios, Agia Aikaterini, and the central church of Agios Charalampos, along with a picturesque central square. The village is situated close to various beaches with crystal-clear waters and sandy shores.

Kokkino Chorio offers tourist accommodations, tavernas, and cafes for those who choose to spend peaceful vacation days in the traditional Cretan landscape. The village gained international fame when the renowned mourning scene of the widow was filmed in its central square, in front of the church, for the famous movie “Zorba the Greek” starring Anthony Quinn.
According to tradition, the name “Red Village” was given during the Ottoman occupation, when the conquerors massacred the women and children of the village, and the flowing blood had painted everything red.

The area around Kokkino Chorio is characterized by numerous caves. Karavospilos (also known as Petsi’s Cave) is located in the coastal area below the settlement, Katalymata caves are found in the center, while Spilia in Drapano, just outside the village, was used by resistance fighters during the German Occupation, as it essentially serves as a passage to the mountains.

Very close to Kokkino Chorio, there is also the “Elephant Cave,” a sea cave filled with stalactites and stalagmites, where exploration offers a unique experience.

Above Kokkino Chorio rises the hill of Drapanokefala, with its peculiar shape, which still retains the Latin name Calapodha that it received during the Venetian period.

At the entrance of the village operates a glass processing factory that is open to visitors, attracting numerous tourists interested in traditional craftsmanship.

The village provides an authentic glimpse into traditional Cretan life while offering easy access to the natural beauty and historical significance of the Apokoronas region.
